In the Life Imitating Satire Department: Just as I was penciling this cartoon, I heard a piece on CBC-Toronto's Metro Morning about Howard Public School, which was banning all speech in the lunch room. (Since then the story has been picked up by the Globe and the school has relented.) A concerned mother was interviewed. Her son had come home and burst into tears when he told her he wasn't allowed to talk during lunch.
Now, I like being prescient, but this sort of thing is scary. Banning children from speaking? Then let's just throw up our hands and expect mad shooting sprees as part of life.
Here is the six-minute Metro Morning clip from September 18. The "no talking" part comes at about 4 minutes.
